Wide-Angle Retinal Imaging

The retina is a vast and intricate anatomical network lining the inner surface of the eye. For centuries, ophthalmologists examined this structure through limited lenses—a process similar to trying to inspect a large room by peering through a keyhole. However, many stealthy eye diseases and vision-threatening tears begin in the far corners (periphery) of the retina, often invisible through that "keyhole."

Ultra-Widefield (UWF) Imaging represents the pinnacle of medical imaging technology. It captures even the most remote, previously unreachable areas of the eye in a single photograph, initiating a new era in diagnostics.

As Ophthalmology Specialist Dr. Ayşe Öner and her high-tech clinical team, we utilize this "space-age" technology to ensure your eye health is protected beyond just "the tip of the iceberg." By blending Turkey’s global health tourism vision with our VIP service standards, we offer international patients a panoramic check-up that is drop-free, painless, and provides instant results without any blurring of vision.

What is Wide-Angle Retinal Imaging?

Traditional fundus cameras and standard examination methods can only capture a narrow 30 to 45-degree area at the center of the retina at one time. This represents only about 15% of the total retinal surface. The remaining 85% must be pieced together through manual observation while the patient moves their eye in various directions.

Using world-renowned technologies like Optos, our clinic employs specially designed ellipsoid mirrors and scanning laser systems. In a single flash lasting only half a second, we generate a massive panoramic map covering 200 degrees (approximately 82%) of the retina. The visual center (macula), optic nerve, and the furthest peripheral boundaries are projected simultaneously onto a high-resolution digital screen.

The Advantage: Comfortable, Drop-Free Examination

The most significant feature of this system is the unparalleled patient comfort it provides.

In a classic retinal exam, special drops are used to dilate (enlarge) the pupil. The patient must wait 30–40 minutes for the drops to work, and afterward, the pupils remain dilated for hours. This causes light sensitivity and blurred vision for 4 to 6 hours, making it impossible to read or drive.

Wide-Angle Imaging eliminates the need for these drops in most cases. The device can scan through a pupil as small as 2 mm. You sit at the device, see a momentary light, and stand up immediately with perfectly clear vision, ready to continue your day.

Critical Role in Early Diagnosis

This panoramic mapping is our "sharpest eye" for catching diseases that start in the periphery and show no symptoms until they threaten central vision:

  1. Retinal Tears and Detachment: Most tears occur in the far periphery. If caught early on a wide-angle scan, these can be "soldered" instantly with an Argon Laser, preventing the need for major surgery (Vitrectomy).
  2. Diabetic Retinopathy: Bleeding and oxygen-deprived (ischemic) areas caused by diabetes often concentrate in the peripheral regions. Mapping these areas allows the physician to see exactly where laser treatment is required.
  3. Intraocular Tumors (Melanomas and Nevi): Malignant tumors or benign moles often grow silently in the distant corners of the eye. UWF imaging detects these masses instantly and allows for millimetric tracking of their size over the years.
  4. Vascular Occlusions and Uveitis: Inflammations and peripheral blockages are evaluated holistically on a single screen.

The VIP Experience with Dr. Ayşe Öner

For international patients traveling from different continents, time management and comfort are as vital as medical success. Dr. Ayşe Öner Clinic transforms this diagnostic step into a VIP experience:

  1. Zero Waiting, Instant Capture: Your program is created the moment you book your flight. On the day you step into our clinic, your 82% retinal map is generated in seconds.
  2. An Uninterrupted Travel Experience: Since no drops are used, you won't experience blurred vision or light sensitivity. You can walk out of our clinic and immediately continue exploring Turkey's museums, restaurants, and landscapes with your family.
  3. Transparent Presentation in Your Native Language: Your panoramic photo is displayed on large, high-definition screens. Dr. Ayşe Öner personally shows you the state of your retina. Professional interpreters ensure you understand every detail in your own language.
  4. Digital Archive and Tele-Medicine: Your maps are stored in our secure digital archives. After returning home, you can share these images with your local doctor or compare them with future scans via our online tele-medicine system to track your health across borders.

Do not let silent diseases hide in the blind spots of your vision. To illuminate the hidden 85% of your retina and experience a VIP panoramic check-up with Turkey’s premier health tourism assurance, contact the international patient consultants at Specialist Dr. Ayşe Öner Clinic today. Perfect vision begins with seeing the whole picture.

Frequently asked questions

Standard examination lenses used by ophthalmologists can only see a very narrow area (about 15%) of the retina directly in front. Seeing the far corners is difficult. The Wide-Field Retina technology in our clinic maps 82% of the retina (panoramic 200 degrees) in just half a second with a single flash. Blinding crises like insidious tears or diabetic hemorrhages usually occur in those unreachable outer edges (periphery). With this device, no pathology goes unnoticed.

The greatest miracle of this device for medical tourism patients is "patient comfort." For most of our patients, those stinging drops that require a 45-minute wait and cause blurry vision all day are not necessary. The device can capture that massive panoramic photograph with its lasers even when your pupils are small. As soon as the procedure is over, you can continue your Turkey holiday with HD clarity and zero blurriness, without even needing sunglasses.

Floaters and flashes of light are the primary precursors of a retinal tear (detachment). When you contact our international VIP consultant line, an emergency protocol is initiated for you. As soon as you arrive, the farthest corners of your retina are scanned with the Wide-Field Camera. If an insidious tear is detected, it is sealed with an Argon Laser within seconds without the need for major surgery, ensuring you complete your holiday safely without fear of blindness.
